Are Your Beliefs Holding You Back?
Our beliefs are essentially any thoughts or opinions we have that we believe to be true. When these beliefs are positive, they create feelings of confidence, self-worth and self-belief. However, when these beliefs are negative, they can make us feel worried, anxious and unworthy. Our beliefs can be about ourselves, other people or the world as a whole, but when they are negative, they are extremely destructive.
So, where do our beliefs come from in the first place? Most of our beliefs are instilled in us when we are very young and usually come from the people closest to us: parents, carers, siblings, teachers and friends. Our minds are like sponges at this stage of our lives and we absorb everything that we are being told or shown. They can also come from experiences we have along the way that have a particularly big impact on us, and these are sometimes refrred to as defining moments.
However they are established, these beliefs then become part of our identity and influence everything in our lives. Negative beliefs, sometimes referred to as limiting beliefs, can hold us back and effect the way we think, the way we feel and the way that we behave.
Examples of limiting beliefs
I’m not good enough
I’m not attractive enough
I’m not clever enough
I’ll never have enough money
Money is the root of all evil
I’ll never find a loving relationship
I’m not loveable
Everyone is out for themselves
The primary job of our brain is to keep us safe. Anything that the brain believes will take us out of our comfort zone, it will try to avoid at all costs even if getting out of our comfort zone could lead to a positive outcome in the end. For example, if you’re repeatedly told growing up that all men are untrustworthy, you will find it difficult to trust men until you deal with that limiting belief. The sad thing is, even if you found a really trustworthy man, you wouldn’t be able to believe it, and in many cases might even sabotage the relationship to prove your belief right.
What can we do about our negative beliefs?
Once our beliefs have been absorbed, they are then transferred to the subconscious part of our minds where all our automatic processes are kept. The subconscious runs everything on autopilot so that our conscious minds can get on with other things, and this makes our beliefs difficult to change at a conscious level. This is where hypnosis can be incredibly effective as hypnosis actually works with the subconscious part of the mind. In hypnosis, you can identify limiting beliefs and eliminate them much more easily.
