Change Unwanted Feelings
Our emotions are important because they are essentially our own personal
guidance system. They let us know how we’re doing and whether what we’re
doing is right for us. Negative emotions can let us know that something is
wrong in any given moment. Consequently, we don’t want to ignore our
feelings because they might be acting as a warning signal. Perhaps we can
compare feelings to a cork in a bowl of water; if we push them down, they can
keep bobbing back up. Eventually, if we push them down too often, they can
become water-logged, sink to the bottom and stay there affecting the clarity of
the water.
It’s important to tune in to our feelings and attempt to understand where they
are coming from. If necessary, we can use the hierarchy of emotions scale,
which you can find in the ‘printables’ section, to help us pinpoint exactly what
emotions we’re feeling. We can then spend some time investigating where
these feelings have come from, and where possible, take some action to
change our circumstances. For example, if we’re angry with our partner, we
can talk to them and explain how we’re feeling and try to find a resolution.
However, it is not always possible to change things, so we need to find another
way to deal with negative emotions. Instead of pushing them down, we can
find a way to let them go, and even replace them with more positive feelings.
